During
school vacation, April 21 – 26, the Dover Public Library will be hosting Comics
Week, with FREE events and opportunities for you to learn about comics and
manga, and even to draw your favorite characters!
Join us
on Monday, April 21 from 3 – 4:30 PM to Learn
About Comics and Manga. Jonathan Waugh, Assistant Manager of Jetpack Comics
in Rochester, NH shows you where superheroes came from, how manga started, and
gives you the inside scoop on all your favorite characters. Plus, he’ll be
giving out free comic books and other goodies! For even more, you can visit
Jetpack Comics on May 3 to take part in the Rochester Free Comic Book Day
Festival! More information can be found at jetpackcomics.com/fcbd.
On
Tuesday, April 22 from 2 – 3:30 PM, the library will hold a FREE showing of the
film My Neighbor Totoro. In this
animated film, two girls move to the country to be near their ailing mother, and
have adventures with the wondrous forest spirits who live nearby. BYOP (Bring
Your Own Popcorn!) and join us for one of director Hayao Miyazaki’s classics.
Rated G, 1 hr. 26 min.
On
Wednesday, April 23 at 9:30am, Miss Tina will present a special preschool Drop-in Story Time with a superhero
theme! Come dressed as your favorite
character (optional)! All ages are
welcome to attend.
Thinking about becoming an artist? Join us on Thursday, April
24 from 3 – 4:30 PM for a Comic
Book/Manga Character Workshop with Peter Simeti. Learn to draw your
favorite comic book or manga character! Bring in picture to work from, or use a
library book as a reference. All skill levels welcome! (scrap paper, finishing
paper, pencils, markers, colored pencils will be supplied for you, but you are
free to bring your own supplies!). Founder
and creator of Alterna Comics, Peter Simeti is the writer of the flagship title
Spectrum (2006) and The Chair (2008). He
has worked mostly in the independent comic field and has lettered, colored, and
inked over 20 works since involved in comics. He has led over 60 drawing workshops. This
workshop is appropriate for ages 10 – 18, and requires preregistration. Please call 516 6050 to register.
On
Saturday, April 26, visit the Children’s Room for LEGO®
Saturday! Use our blocks or bring your own to build and
create your own superhero, supercar, or imaginary city like Metropolis or
Gotham City. Legos will be available all
day so drop in anytime to meet new friends, share your building tips, get new
ideas, and have fun!
All week, children of all ages are invited to make a Superhero
Mask at the “Make-it, Take-it” craft table in the Children’s Room. All
materials will be provided!
This week is also an opportunity for
parents, to be a
superhero to your child! Your child
loves to spend time with you for no other reason than just being together
enjoying each other’s company. What better way to spend some one-on-one time
with your child than playing a board game? The Children’s Room staff has
rummaged through their closets and come up with some “classic” games to share
with library users during school vacation week. Bring your child in to play a
game or two with you, siblings or friends!
