I Read Banned Books

And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson

The most challenged book in 2006, is the true story of
Roy and Silo, two chinstrap penguins at New York’s Central Park who raised an egg from a mixed-sex penguin couple. Protesters felt it promoted homosexuality, was anti-family, and unsuited to the age group.

This is such a heart felt story! Who can't feel compassion for a penguin - so eager to parent that they sit on a rock hoping it will hatch like an egg. Your posting made me laugh a little because the penguins are a same-sex couple - not a mixed-sex couple.

For another interesting picturebook on different types of families try Thunderstruck Stork by David Olson (Albert Whitman, 2007). Its the story of a stork who accidentally delivers the wrong babies to animal parents around the world. Frog's raise elephants and sharks tend to their baby chicken. Each parent loves their child and makes the necessary adjustments to raise their baby to the best of their ability. When the stork tries to correct his mistake he realizes that these families love eachother just as much as any other traditionally formed family.
