"Treasure from the Isles of Shoals" program Tuesday, April 21 @ 7pm

    

Seacoast historian and author J. Dennis Robinson will present “Treasure from the Isles of Shoals: How New Archaeology is Changing Old History” at the Dover Public Library on Tuesday, April 21 at 7pm.   

      Sponsored by the Friends of the Library and a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council, the program will delve into the history of the Isles of Shoals. Robinson explains, “There is treasure here, but not the pirate kind.” Scientific digs on Smuttynose Island are changing New England history. Archaeologists have unearthed over 300,000 artifacts from this largely uninhabited rock just off our coastline.

       This evidence proves that prehistoric Native Americans hunted New Hampshire’s only offshore islands 6,000 years ago. Hundreds of European fishermen split, salted, and dried valuable Atlantic cod here from the 1620s. “King Haley” ruled a survivalist kingdom here before Thomas Laighton struck tourist gold when his family took over the region’s first hotel on Smuttynose. Laighton’s daughter, Celia Thaxter, spun poetic tales of ghosts and pirates. Come to learn the truth behind the romantic legends of Gosport Harbor in this colorful show-and-tell presentation. 

J. Dennis Robinson, a longtime Smuttynose steward, has published over 1,000 articles on New

Hampshire history and culture. His hardcover histories of Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel both received honors from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). Among his other books are “Under the Isles of Shoals” (2012) and “Mystery on the Isles of Shoals” (2014). Robinson is also editor of SeacoastNH.com, a web site about NH history and culture. His lectures are designed to make history both entertaining and accessible to all audiences. This presentation is free and open to the public. Please Pick Up Your Museum Passes!

We love that Dover Public Library cardholders are using our museum passes—93 passes borrowed in March! However, we are less happy that there were another 25 passes reserved, but never picked up. We realize that plans change--kids get sick, the car breaks down… But please, please give us a call as soon as you know that you will be unable to borrow the pass so another library patron can make use of it. Our 16 museum passes are available for everyone’s enjoyment!

Part-time Library Assistant I, Children’s Room Circulation Desk:

Average 12 HOURS/week:  schedule includes afternoons, one evening, and alternating Saturdays. (availability for occasional extra subbing a plus).

We are seeking a person with a background working with children (academic degree or practical experience in a school, library, or childcare setting), superior customer service skills, and familiarity with basic computer technology.

Duties include checking library materials in and out, registering new borrowers, providing readers’ advisory services and guidance in locating library materials, and assisting patrons in the use of computer workstations and Internet access.  Duties may also include creating displays & materials to promote reading, and conducting preschool story times.

Starting hourly rate is $12.09

Position is open until filled.

Benefits include vacation, holiday and sick leave on a proportional basis.

Digital Magazines have arrived! 

A digital magazine feature has been added to the NH Downloadable books web site. There are about 40 titles including Bon Appetit, Car & Driver, Cooks Illustrated, Country Living, Field & Stream, Martha Stewart Living, Newsweek, Popular Science, Runner's World, and Wired. Follow this link  for instructions on how to use it. I just downloaded the latest issue of Organic Gardening and can't wait to read it.

Poetry Contest

13th Annual Dover Public Library Poetry Contest

 The Dover Public Library is pleased to announce the 13th Annual Dover Public Library Poetry contest for grades K-12.  Prizes will be awarded in six different categories:  Grades K-2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, and 11 &12.  Poems will be judged on originality, style and creativity.  Deadline for entry is April 15^th. Students may pick up information about the contest at the Dover Public Library, any Dover school library, or at our website at library.dover.nh.gov.  All participants are invited to attend an “Evening of Poetry” on Monday, May 18th at 6:30pm; refreshments will be served.  Students are invited to read their poetry at this event, but this will be purely voluntary.  For more information about the contest please contact Denise LaFrance at 516-6082.

HeritageQuest has a new look

If you are doing genealogy research make sure to take a look at HeritageQuest Online. HeritageQuest Online is now powered by Ancestry.com. If you have used Ancestry for genealogical or other historical research, the new HeritageQuest interface should look and feel familiar to you. A new Image Viewer offers basic and advanced capabilities without any plug-in, making it easy to share images.Image resolution is significantly improved with the addition of greyscale and color.

In addition, the content of HeritageQuest has expanded.
