2016 Summer Reading Program details

Kids!
Are you ready for a summer full of fun and games? “On Your Mark, Get Set, Read!”, the Children’s Summer Reading Program at the Dover Public Library, begins on Tuesday, June 21. From 2pm to 4pm that day, we’ll kick-off with a Summer Celebration. Register for the program during this time and enjoy crafts, food, and visitors from Holy Rosary Credit Union and Texas Roadhouse. Everyone who attends will also be entered into a raffle for a special prize. Don’t worry, if you can’t make it to this event you can sign-up anytime during the six- week program.
When kids entering grades K-6 sign-up, they will choose which team they would like to be on: Bruins, Celtics, Patriots, or Red Sox. Throughout the summer, check the scoreboard in the Children’s Room to see which team is reading the most minutes. Which one of our beloved New England teams will prevail?
Preschoolers are encouraged to register for the “1000 Books Before Kindergarten” program and complete a summer reading activity sheet. Not only will participants enjoy some great books, audiobooks, and ebooks, they will also have the opportunity to earn prizes.

We also have lots of special events planned throughout the program.

Saturday, June 25 from 10am to 12pm: Snap Circuit Fun! The Dover Shockwave Robotics Team members will be on hand to help kids build projects with Snap Circuits. This is a great way to introduce kids to electrical circuits while having fun!

Tuesday, June 28 at 1:30pm in the Library Lecture Hall: We will learn about “The Wonderful World of Bats”.  After the presentation, kids will make their own bat T-Shirt.

Thursday, June 30 at 2pm in the Library Lecture Hall:  Don’t miss the amazing magician Norman Ng. His show will truly astound all members of the family.

Wednesday, July 6 from 6pm to 8pm in the Library Lecture Hall:  Join us for a MarioKart Tournament.  This event is for kids going into 5th grade and above, and registration is required.  Pizza & refreshments will be served.

Monday, July 11 at 6:30pm in the Library Lecture Hall: Storyteller Simon Brooks will entertain us with folktales, myths, and legends.

Tuesday, July 19 at 6:30pm in the Library Lecture Hall: The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire will bring their program “Amazing Adventures: Healthy Minds Spark Makers” to the library.

Wednesday, July 20 from 2pm to 4pm on the front lawn of the McConnell Center:  Come and climb our 24-foot portable climbing wall!  This event is for kids 4 years and older.  A parent must sign a release form provided by Vertical Dreams.

Wednesday, July 27 at 10:00am at the Seymour Osman Community Center:  Ilze Luneau, who has performed on national shows and at professional and college sporting events, will demonstrate her trick basketball skills.

Saturday, July 30 from 9am to 1pm: Celebrate Harry Potter’s Birthday! Pass through Platform 9 3/4 then be sorted into wizarding house. Participate in magical classes including Wand Making, Herbology, Potions, and Care of Magical Creatures. Snacks will be provided in the Great Hall (Library Lecture Hall) and students are welcome to test their flying skills with a friendly game of Quidditch on the McConnell Center's front lawn. Participants will also compete in a Horcrux Scavenger Hunt and trivia contest for Harry Potter prizes.
Tuesday, August 2 at 6pm on the front lawn: We will wrap up our summer reading program with our final celebration. TJ Wheeler will entertain us with his family-friendly blues music. Traditional lawn games and food will also be part of this fun-filled evening.

But wait, that’s not all. Every week there will be a new sports-themed craft at our Creation Station. Stop in anytime to make and take your creation. Wednesdays at 10am, there will be a drop-in Family Storytime featuring books, songs, fingerplays, and games. Friday mornings are for our youngest patrons. “Mother Goose on the Loose”, a special program for infants through 2 year olds with a caregiver, will begin at 10am. From 10:30-11:00am we will offer “Toddler Exploration Time” featuring sensory activities. Our popular “Music with benji” program at 11am will get the whole family singing and dancing. Every Saturday during the summer reading program is a “LEGO Saturday”. Come in anytime between 9am and 1pm to build with our Legos and Duplos.

And one more thing….we will take the program on the road this year. On Fridays from 11:30am-1pm we will be at the Seymour Osman Community Center. Participants in the summer reading program will be able to report their reading time, get prizes, and return and check out books. There will also be a storytime with crafts and activities.

This will be your entry to win weekly prizes.  We’ll compile the list of what everyone has read and share it anonymously so you can discover some new titles for your to-read list!
