"I am probably one of the only people on staff whose first library was
this one! My mother had 15 children to deal with so we did not go on too
many outings. I was school age (probably 4th or 5th grade) by the time I
visited the library with a friend. We walked down from school (St.
Mary's Academy) and to me it was like walking into a church (we did get
to go to church every week!) It was very quiet here, almost sacred, and
the librarians were stern and scary (like the nuns)!
The Children's Room was where the Browse Room is now. I liked the
fireplace. I do remember some of the first books I ever checked out:
Strawberry Girl and Homer Price. I just looked up the copyright date.
Those books were already OLD by the time I took them out!
P.S. Homer Price was still in the collection when I started working in the Children's Room!"
