NH's Composer Amy Cheney Beach---a memoir in words & music

NH composer Amy Beach in Words and Music at Dover Library April 16

       On Tuesday, April 16 at 7pm, the Friends of the Dover Public Library are pleased to present a tribute, called “Words and Music”, to NH composer Amy Cheney Beach (1867—1944). Hear the story of America’s first female composer of large-scale classical music – brought to life by performers Marie Harris and Adi Rule.

       Amy Beach’s "Gaelic" Symphony, premiered by the Boston Symphony Orchestra in 1896, was the first symphony composed and published by an American woman. An acclaimed pianist and New Hampshire native, Beach was a child prodigy and is often referred to as ‘the Dean of American Women Composers.’ In this moving memoir, Marie Harris plays the part of Amy Beach while Adi Rule provides musical accompaniment.

       Marie Harris is a former Poet Laureate of New Hampshire and author of several volumes of poetry and children's books, including “G is for Granite” and “The Girl Who Heard Colors”. She has done extensive research on the life and works of Amy Beach, and created this presentation.  

       Adi Rule is a soprano who grew up singing and doing theater in New Hampshire. She was a member of, and a soloist for, the Tanglewood Festival Chorus, which is the chorus of the Boston Symphony Orchestra/Boston Pops. Adi is also a writer. Her next book, “Hearts of Ice”, comes out in September 2019 from Scholastic. Visit her online at adirule.com.

Sign Up for a Haunted Library Escape Room!

In honor of National Library Week we'll be doing TWO adult escape rooms on Tuesday, April 9th at 6pm and 7pm! Join us to solve the mystery of the Haunted Library. OoOoOOoooo!

In 1959, Librarian Anne Leach passed away during a Trustees meeting. Since that day strange noises can be heard in the library, particularly at closing when rooms are dark and silent. Last week a librarian discovered a mysterious box. Can you help us open the box and finally lay Miss Leach to rest? Adults only. Registration required.

The Poetry Contest is Starting!

The Dover Public Library is pleased to announce the 17th Annual Dover Public Library Poetry contest for grades K-12. Prizes will be awarded in six different categories: Grades K-2, 3 & 4, 5 & 6, 7 & 8, 9 & 10, and 11 &12. Poems will be judged on originality, style and creativity. Deadline for entry is April 16th. Students may pick up information about the contest at the Dover Public Library, any Dover school library, or at our website at library.dover.nh.gov starting on March 13.

All participants are invited to attend an “Evening of Poetry” on Monday, May 20th at 6:30pm; refreshments will be served. Students are invited to read their poetry at this event, but this will be purely voluntary. For more information about the contest please contact Denise LaFrance at 516-6082.

Hear Celtic band "Penhallow" at the library on March 19!

     

      The Friends of the Dover Public Library are delighted to host Portsmouth-based Celtic band “Penhallow” in the Lecture Hall at the Dover Public Library on Tuesday evening, March 19 at 7pm.

     Musicians Bill Zecker, Tyler Buck, Joe Fuller, Lloyd Allen, and Jeff Murdock will play a medley of Irish instrumental and vocal music during this traditional Irish sessions performance. Everyone is Irish in March! Come and join us for this toe-tapping show. Admission is free! For more information, call the Dover Public Library 603-516-6050.

Try Our New “Binge Boxes”

Do you like to binge watch? Cardholders at the Dover Public Library can now check out  Binge Boxes! Stored in a handy carrying case, Binge Boxes are mini-collections of 4-6 movie DVDs, all centered on a film theme or actor. Binge Boxes are great for sleepovers, movie nights, holiday weekends, or building up your film knowledge.
      
The Library’s current Binge Boxes, available now for checkout, include the films of Alfred Hitchcock, Audrey Hepburn, Cary Grant, Mel Brooks, Harry Potter, James Bond, Indiana Jones, and Robert Redford, plus a set of films set in New Hampshire, Film Classics, and sets of Science Fiction and Western themed movies.
      
You may check out one Binge Box a 2 week period. You can also place holds on Binge Boxes, but they cannot be renewed.

Borrow the Birding Bag!

     The days are getting longer now and the birds are starting to sing. Do you ever wonder which bird makes that particular call? Or what those pretty yellow birds are? Check out the Dover Public Library’s new Birding Bag and find out! The Birding Bag is a backpack that contains binoculars, a bird identification book, a bird checklist and pen to mark the birds you identify, bird flash cards, a book of bird songs with speakers so you can hear the songs, a bird call, and a booklet on “Birding the New Hampshire Seacoast”. The Birding Bag may be checked out for three weeks, just like a book. You can ask for it at the Adult Circulation Desk.
