Did you know the Library has a database of legal forms for you to use here at the Library, or at home, available 24 hours a day?

The Legal Forms Library provides a wide selection of legal forms specific to New Hampshire, as well as multi-state forms across the most popular legal areas. It includes real estate contracts, wills, pre-marital agreements, bankruptcy, divorce, landlord tenant and many others. You will also find an attorney directory and a dictionary of legal definitions explained in laymen's language. If you have ever tried to find a legal form on the Internet you know what a great resource this is. Forms are easy to find and free! Make sure to ask for the secret password the next time you are at the library.

Dover City Directories Online (1865--1888)

      The Dover Public Library has initiated a preservation project to digitize Dover’s historic City Directories and is pleased to announce that twelve 19^th century directories, from the years 1865—1888, are now available for public searching online. Dover City Directories, printed about every two years since 1830, contain valuable information about residents, street locations, occupations, and businesses existing in a certain time period. Directories are often used by researchers, historians, and genealogists, and by those seeking to determine the age of a house and its occupants over time.  Directories can also help trace the history of local commercial establishments and retailers.

       “Dover City Directories Online” is available through the Dover Public Library’s website: http://library.dover.nh.gov. Just click on the link about midway down the list. There is no login or password required and the site is open to everyone to search. The database is searchable by year or keyword  (such as name, street address, or occupation) and is very easy to use. Several of the directories also contain information about Somersworth, Great Falls (Rollinsford), and Rochester so those in neighboring communities may find this database helpful as well.

       The Dover Public Library plans to add about a dozen new directories to this database every year, seeking to save this most valuable information in an easily accessible digital format while preserving the fragile print originals from further deterioration. We Have Free Books for You!

Remember...all the Friends' BOOKSALE "leftovers" are FREE through this Saturday, Nov. 15. There's still a good selection left, so please feel free to take some before they get moved next week to their final resting place in the Book Hut at the Recycling Center.

The Library Will Be Closed for Veterans Day

The Library will be closed Tuesday, November 11th, in honor of Veterans Day.

Life in the NHL: Q & A about professional hockey with Linesman Brian Murphy---November 18 @ 7pm

The Friends of the Dover Public Library will host Dover resident and National Hockey League veteran Brian Murphy for a talk about professional hockey and officiating on Tuesday, November 18 at 7pm in the Library’s Lecture Hall.

Linesman Brian Murphy (#93) has worked over 1600 regular season NHL games and 230 playoff games, including six Stanley Cup finals. He’s also officiated at the 1999 NHL All-Star Game, the 2004 World Cup of Hockey, the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics, and the Winter Classic game at Fenway Park.  Officials call 73 to 75 regular-season games. They are the first skaters on the ice before each period and the last to leave when it’s over. They are in motion for all 60 minutes of play.   

Each NHL game has four officials. Two referees supervise the game and call penalties. The two linesmen do pretty much everything else —drop the puck for face-offs, make offside calls, flag hand passes and pucks batted with high sticks, and break up fights. “You’re not out there to be noticed,” says Murphy. “No one at the end of the day is going to tell you that you did a good job.”

 Brian will talk about his many years as an NHL official and recall some of the most memorable games he’s officiated. Brian will also be happy to answer any audience questions about the National Hockey League and its players, the game of hockey, and his job enforcing the rules. Come see "The Nutcracker" Highlights on November 18 @ 4pm

       

        On Tuesday, November 18 at 4pm, Edra Toth, Artistic Director and Founder of Northeastern Ballet Theatre, and several of her dancers, will entertain children and adults in the Dover Public Library’s Lecture Hall, presenting dance highlights from the Theatre’s upcoming annual production of "The Nutcracker".

        Edra Toth was born in Budapest, but relocated to Boston as a small child.She made her debut with the Boston Ballet at age 13, and was the leading star for the Boston Ballet for over ten years. Edra cherishes the opportunity to offer children the same chance that was given to her. By instructing children in dance, she teaches the rewards of training, hard work, and discipline.

        After the dancers’ performances, Edra will conduct a mini-class, teaching audience members to perform the Russian dance!  Northeastern Ballet ‘s studio is located in Suite 239  at the McConnell Center in Dover. Please join us at the library for this special ballet preview. This program is free and all ages are welcome.  Refreshments will be served.

Only library cardholders will be able to purchase items on the first day of the sale so be sure to bring your Dover borrower’s card with you on the 24th! The sale opens to non-cardholders and the general public on Saturday, October 25. 

Annual Booksale Starts October 24!

Doors open at 9am on Friday, October 24 for the Friends of the Library’s annual, two-week-long, gigantic fall booksale. Only library cardholders will be able to purchase items on the first day of the sale so be sure to bring your Dover borrower’s card with you on the 24th! The sale opens to non-cardholders and the general public on Saturday, October 25.

Thousands of paperbacks, hardcover books, and media items for all ages will be available at prices from $.50 to $2.00. Many of the sale items are books donated to the library while others are items discarded from the library’s collections. Booksale prices will be further reduced on Wednesday, October 29, and during Week #2 of the booksale, November 3-8, the remainder of the items will be sold for the bargain price of just $1.00 per bag or boxful. Any leftover books will be given away for free beginning Monday, November 10.

All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library, a 501(c)3 charitable organization which last year donated over $15,000 to the library for museum passes, children’s and adult programs, furnishings and equipment. Applications to join the Friends of the Library are available at the library’s circulation desk.

Membership is $10 annually or $7 for seniors. Friends who work at the booksale receive a 50% discount on purchases. Call 516-6050 for more information.

 Library hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am to 8:30pm; Thursday and Friday 9am to 5:30pm; and Saturday 9am to 5pm. The Library will be closed on Tuesday, November 11 for the Veterans Day holiday.
