One basket contains brand new children's books, the other has new best selling adult fiction. You can help support the friends of the Library by buying raffle tickets: $5 each or 5 tickets for $20. Only library cardholders will be able to purchase items on the first day of the sale so be sure to bring your Dover borrower’s card with you on the 24th! The sale opens to non-cardholders and the general public on Saturday, October 25. 

Annual Booksale Starts October 24!

Doors open at 9am on Friday, October 24 for the Friends of the Library’s annual, two-week-long, gigantic fall booksale. Only library cardholders will be able to purchase items on the first day of the sale so be sure to bring your Dover borrower’s card with you on the 24th! The sale opens to non-cardholders and the general public on Saturday, October 25.

Thousands of paperbacks, hardcover books, and media items for all ages will be available at prices from $.50 to $2.00. Many of the sale items are books donated to the library while others are items discarded from the library’s collections. Booksale prices will be further reduced on Wednesday, October 29, and during Week #2 of the booksale, November 3-8, the remainder of the items will be sold for the bargain price of just $1.00 per bag or boxful. Any leftover books will be given away for free beginning Monday, November 10.

All proceeds benefit the Friends of the Library, a 501(c)3 charitable organization which last year donated over $15,000 to the library for museum passes, children’s and adult programs, furnishings and equipment. Applications to join the Friends of the Library are available at the library’s circulation desk.

Membership is $10 annually or $7 for seniors. Friends who work at the booksale receive a 50% discount on purchases. Call 516-6050 for more information.

 Library hours are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday 9am to 8:30pm; Thursday and Friday 9am to 5:30pm; and Saturday 9am to 5pm. The Library will be closed on Tuesday, November 11 for the Veterans Day holiday.

Bestselling Author Lisa Gardner here on October 15!

     

     Lisa Gardner, renowned writer of best-selling suspense thrillers, will visit the Dover Public Library for a supremely entertaining author talk and book signing on Wednesday, October 15 at 7pm. Lisa has authored 30 novels with over 22 million copies in print in 30 countries. Her success crosses into the small screen with four of her novels becoming movies.
      Lisa has created three popular detective series including six Quincy & Rainie suspense thrillers (The FBI Profiler Series) set in Oregon, seven D.D. Warren novels featuring a feisty Boston homicide detective (female), and three books in the Tessa Leoni, former state trooper turned New Hampshire private investigator, series.
    The International Thriller Writers have nominated “Touch & Go” (a Tessa Leoni book) for 2014’s Best Hardcover of the Year.  This is Lisa’s 3rd nomination for this award and her novel “The Neighbor” (D.D. Warren series) won this category in 2010.  
     Lisa Gardner’s latest published novel is a D.D. Warren thriller, “Fear Nothing”, which came out in January 2014, and her next suspense novel (a Tessa Leoni book) will be “Crash & Burn” to be published in February 2015.

Bicycle History with Zip Zamarchi, Tuesday, Oct. 14 @ 7pm

     On Tuesday evening, October 14 at 7pm, the Friends of the Library will present a very entertaining program by Zip Zamarchi of Eliot, Maine. Zip is a collector of a wide variety of bicycles and will talk about the development and social importance of bicycles.

     His collection, which he has been building for nearly 40 years, consists of approximately 70 bicycles, some of which will be on display in the library’s Lecture Hall that evening. “I have ridden since I was a child and am still riding today, in parades, socially and on trips,” says Zamarchi.  He believes his most interesting bike is an 1889 Elliot Hickory, spied as he drove by it and stopped to take a look. “It was a fortunate happenstance,” Zip says, “as Elliot Hickory bicycles, produced by inventor Sterling Elliot and his son Harmon in Newton, Mass., in the late 1800s, are so rare.”

Lisette's List

I just finished Lisette's List by Susan Vreeland and just loved it.  I have enjoyed her others books such as Girl in Hyacinth Blue, Luncheon at the Boating Party and Clara and Mr. Tiffany.  This novel is a bit different in that it doesn't focus on one artist, but looks at several paintings that are owned by one of the characters.  The artists include Pissaro, Picasso, Cezanne, and Chagall.  Here is the jacket description of the book: 

 "A young Parisian woman is exiled to Provence to take care of her husband's ailing grandfather during the Vichy regime, but discovers that despite the horrors of war, the paintings of Cezanne, Pissaro, Chagall, and Picasso bring to life the landscape around her and allow her once again to experience love."

Book Group

12 of us attended last night's DPL Book Group to discuss The Beginner's Goodbye by Anne Tyler. Though the book received a tepid response from several members, the discussion was absolutely wonderful. Thanks to all that attended and helped me see parts of the book in a different light. Please join us for the next meeting on Monday, October 20 at 6:30pm to discuss Life After Life by Kate Atkinson. Reserve Your Museum Pass Today!

We are very happy to introduce our new Museum Pass Reservation System!

Dover Public Library cardholders can now reserve any of the Library’s 16 museum passes online through our website! This is a great way for cardholders to see what we have to offer, and when a pass is available, without having to wait until the Library is open. Links are provided to each institution’s website, so you can quickly see what is on exhibition for that day. To reserve a pass you will need your Dover Public Library Card (in good standing: i.e. not owing us over $10), and your library PIN (which was originally set to the last 4 digits of your phone number). Don’t worry if you are uncomfortable reserving online, you can always call us at 516-6050, or come in. We will gladly do it for you. Passes will still be housed in the Children’s Room and at the Circulation Desk.
 
*Remember: your reservation is NOT your ticket into the museum.
You must visit the library in person to pick up the actual pass before you go!

Author Helen Peppe at Dover Library September 16

            

 The Friends of the Dover Public Library are pleased to present the first program in their fall Cultural Series” at the library. On Tuesday, September 16 at 7pm, come for an entertaining talk by Helen Peppe, author of the memoir  “Pigs Can’t Swim”.

              Peppe’s book recounts her haphazard youth as the youngest member of an eccentric, nine-child family on a hardscrabble Maine farm, where she and her siblings were raised in an atmosphere of sibling rivalry, poverty, male chauvinism, and absurd interactions with their animals and pets. In telling her wayward family tale, Peppe manages deadpan humor, an unerring eye for the absurd, and poignant compassion for her utterly overwhelmed parents. With feisty resilience and candor, she offers wry insight and moments of tenderness with family and animals. One reviewer said:  "Pigs Can't Swim” is an unruly, joyous troublemaker of a book. 

             Helen Peppe began writing stories, mostly about animals, on scraps of butcher paper when she was knee-high to a horse. (All of her furry characters lived happily ever after.) As a student, she wrote short stories and personal essays while working as a professional photographer specializing in horses and dogs.
