A Hurricane in Dover 65 Years Ago

Did you know in August 25, 1954, Hurricane Carol hit Dover?

The Library skylight caved in during this storm, narrowly missing Librarian Anne Elizabeth Leach.Nine windows were broken in St. Mary's School. Moore's Boatyard was almost wiped out and the B & M freight shed was blown to the ground. The First Parish Church lost two stained glass windows and several windows in the Steeple. An Orchard Street tree came down on cars belonging to Armand Dureau, John Dubois, and George Webster. Foster's Daily Democrat could not be published for the first time in 82 years due to the power outage.

Local author Michael C. Ward will be returning to the library – virtually!

Ward will talk about his family’s experience as the “Index of Integration” in the virtual presentation “The Colored Folks Ain’t Gonna Make It: A Black American Experience” hosted by the Dover Public Library on Wednesday, August 12 at 6:30pm. The free program will be held online through Ring Central. Registration is required to access the login information. You do not need to be a library card holder to attend.

The presentation will include stories from Ward’s Sketches of Lee collection, which chronicles his family’s history combating the racial stereotypes of the 50’s. Signed copies of the first two volumes in the collection, A Colored Man in Exeter and The Colored Folks Ain’t Gonna Make It, will be available for purchase at the library until August 24. Payment can be made through cash or check.

Ward began writing his family’s history in 2015 when his father Harold was in the hospital with weeks to live. He recalled him saying, “Michael, I want you to write the stories of our existence. I want my great-grandchildren to know where they came from.” Since then Ward has been fulfilling his father’s last request and recounting the stories of his family.

The Ward family was led by Harold and Virginia, a couple with strong convictions and compassion that they passed down to their children. As the first African-Americans in the area, the family encountered many people who had never spoken to or seen someone of color before and were relentless in disproving stereotypes of that era, eventually becoming respected members of the community.

Keep Audiobooks Out of the Heat

Remember the old stickers on VHS rental tapes, Be Kind, Rewind? We would like to adapt that here at the library for our audiobooks. Be kind, don't keep Library audiobooks in your car during a heat wave. They do get damaged. Not as catchy, I know. A twelve disc audiobook has already been returned with heat damaged discs.

Do you wish you had a hobby to occupy your time normally spent out and about? Check out Creative Bug, available free with your library card. You can teach yourself any number of crafts or improve your skills using the instructional videos on the site. From Knitting to Drawing and everything in between.

Quarantining Library Materials

Please remember to return all items in the outside book drops. They will go into quarantine for 3 days before they are checked in and taken off your account. There won't be fines for the quarantine period.  Speaking of fines, they will start accruing for overdue items as of July 13. Please be patient as we make the system contortions necessary to get it to work with all the craziness over the past few months. You may see fines on your account that you don't think should be there. They may disappear on their own, or you can certainly ask us about them when you are in. Starting on Wednesday, July 15th we will again have our cash drawers back so fine payments can be made.

We have added new magazines to the Flipster downloadable magazine collection. You can now read Do It Yourself, Entertainment Weekly, The Harvard Health Letter, and The New Yorker, free on your tablet, phone or PC. You can even read back issues!

The Stairs Are Closed, Use the Elevator

Our beautiful old building is feeling its age. Last Thursday a part of the ceiling collapsed with a roar and a rumble. We are very thankful that no one was using the stairs at the time. We have temporarily closed off the stairs from the ground floor and first floor because the ceiling is still weakened. We have an expert coming in this week to repair the damage. Until then we are asking everyone to use the elevator from the ground floor. It simply isn't safe to use the stairs until it is repaired. Thank you for understanding.
