National Library Week Logic Puzzle: Win Prizes!

Can you decipher this logic puzzle? Match the book title with its protagonist’s name, its Dover setting, and the crime solved in each of these 12 fictitious mysteries.

Author Griff Sutton’s final mystery in his “Calendar” series has just been published. “Dreary December” is the 12^th book in this popular series, which also includes “July Sparklers”, “Agonizing August”,  Spooky September”,  and “November can be Noxious”. Each book features a different  month (January---December) in its title. Each book also has a different detective who solves a different crime (one is embezzlement) right here in Dover, NH!

Here are your clues! Good luck!

1.)    The title month in which Conrad Tooby catches a litterer is exactly 2 months earlier in the year than the title month of the mystery set at Hannaford’s (which stars Harry McMaster).

2.)    The title month in the book starring Genevieve Potsdam (which is set in Henry Law Park) immediately precedes the title month of the novel in which the crime is jaywalking (whose title month is earlier in the year than that of the mystery set in Hilton Park.)

3.)    In “Mayhem in May”, Timothy Quince searches the Children’s Museum to solve the theft of some puppets. “April is for Action” involves a forgery. A smuggling operation is thwarted in “October Outcast”. “January Jezebel” is set at the Weeks Crossing.

4.)    Three novels with consecutive title months are the book in which corporate espionage takes place at the Woodman Institute, the racketeering mystery, and the one in which Victoria Bartley defeats the bootleggers, in that order.

5.)    “Madness in March” is set at Harvey’s Bakery. “February Felons” is set at the Dover Public Library. In “June is Jinxed”, an heiress is caught speeding.

6.)    Three books with consecutive title months are the one in which Stan Lorenzo discovers the blackmailer’s identity, the littering mystery, and the novel in which Wayne Ficharski nabs the shoplifter, in that order.

7.)    Three mysteries with consecutive title months are the book starring Jake Constant, the Rachel Havenstein novel, and the one set at Moe’s Subs, in that order.

8.)    The title month of the Isabelle Kincaid book is later in the year than the title month of the mystery set in the Cocheco Millworks but earlier in the year than the title month of the Norman O’Sullivan novel.

9.)    The title month of the Annie Eggleston mystery is later in the year than the title month of the book set at George’s Marina but earlier in the year than the title month of the book set on Garrison Hill.

Meet Dover author Gregory Bastianelli on April 13 at 7pm

On Monday evening April 13 at 7pm, meet author Gregory Bastianelli at the Dover Public Library. Bastianelli has just published his second novel, “Loonies”, copies of which will be available for purchase, courtesy of Jetpack Comics of Rochester.

Gregory Bastianelli was born, raised, and still lives in Dover. His first novel was “Jokers Club” and he has also published several short stories and the novella “Lair of the Mole People” which appears in the pulp anthology “Men of Mystery Vol. II”. He graduated from UNH where he studied writing. He then worked nearly two decades in the newsroom at Foster’s Daily Democrat where the highlights of his career were interviewing shock rocker Alice Cooper and B-movie icon Bruce Campbell.

Join us for "Money Smart Week" events April 20 & 22

      The Dover Public Library is hosting two free events as part of the nationwide “Money Smart Week”, April 18-25.  A “Smart Financial Planning” workshop will be held on Monday, April 20 at 7pm, and an “American Consumer Credit Counseling Credit” workshop will be offered on Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30pm.  These are just two of more than 3,500 free financial programs planned nationwide during Money Smart Week^®.

       “Smart Financial Planning” on Monday, April 20 at 7pm with Faye Kathryn Doria - Money doesn’t come with a set of instructions.  If you want to get ahead, you must take charge of your personal finances.  This talk will outline practical steps for taking charge of your financial future.  It will contain information on managing your finances, along with how to save money, use credit wisely, and make your money work for you. Whether you are trying to start a savings plan or already have a substantial nest-egg, there are things you can do to save smarter.  We’ll also discuss how to tackle stubborn debt.  We’ll de-mystify some investment terms, and show you which insurances are vital at different stages of life. Here’s the set of instructions you’ve been looking for to help you take control of your financial future! Faye Kathryn Doria, EA, CFP© has been giving fee-only financial planning advice since 1987.  She is a Registered Investment Advisor with Resolute Financial, LLC in Dover, NH and Newburyport, MA.  She is a Certified Financial Planner and enrolled to practice before the IRS.  She is a fiduciary who puts her clients’ interests first.

      “American Consumer Credit Counseling Credit Workshop” on Wednesday, April 22 at 6:30pm --- ACCC’s free workshop on credit will cover topics such as: managing credit, how to maintain good credit, why credit scores are important, and using credit to your advantage.

      Money Smart Week is a public awareness campaign to promote financial education across all age groups. Launched in 2002 by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, the program is now active in more than 45 states through national partnerships with the Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the US Department of Agriculture, Cooperative Extension, and the American Library Association.

      “Money Smart Week began as a coordinated effort among a small group of Chicago-area organizations working to promote financial literacy,” says Alejo Torres, of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. “Today, Money Smart Week continues to expand nationally, providing greater awareness of, and access to, personal finance resources for all.”

      Money Smart Week events are open to the public at businesses, financial institutions, schools, libraries, nonprofits, and government agencies throughout the country on topics including kids and money, unemployment, managing student debt and retirement. "Treasure from the Isles of Shoals" program Tuesday, April 21 @ 7pm

    

Seacoast historian and author J. Dennis Robinson will present “Treasure from the Isles of Shoals: How New Archaeology is Changing Old History” at the Dover Public Library on Tuesday, April 21 at 7pm.   

      Sponsored by the Friends of the Library and a grant from the New Hampshire Humanities Council, the program will delve into the history of the Isles of Shoals. Robinson explains, “There is treasure here, but not the pirate kind.” Scientific digs on Smuttynose Island are changing New England history. Archaeologists have unearthed over 300,000 artifacts from this largely uninhabited rock just off our coastline.

       This evidence proves that prehistoric Native Americans hunted New Hampshire’s only offshore islands 6,000 years ago. Hundreds of European fishermen split, salted, and dried valuable Atlantic cod here from the 1620s. “King Haley” ruled a survivalist kingdom here before Thomas Laighton struck tourist gold when his family took over the region’s first hotel on Smuttynose. Laighton’s daughter, Celia Thaxter, spun poetic tales of ghosts and pirates. Come to learn the truth behind the romantic legends of Gosport Harbor in this colorful show-and-tell presentation. 

J. Dennis Robinson, a longtime Smuttynose steward, has published over 1,000 articles on New

Hampshire history and culture. His hardcover histories of Strawbery Banke Museum and historic Wentworth by the Sea Hotel both received honors from the American Association for State and Local History (AASLH). Among his other books are “Under the Isles of Shoals” (2012) and “Mystery on the Isles of Shoals” (2014). Robinson is also editor of SeacoastNH.com, a web site about NH history and culture. His lectures are designed to make history both entertaining and accessible to all audiences. This presentation is free and open to the public. Please Pick Up Your Museum Passes!

We love that Dover Public Library cardholders are using our museum passes—93 passes borrowed in March! However, we are less happy that there were another 25 passes reserved, but never picked up. We realize that plans change--kids get sick, the car breaks down… But please, please give us a call as soon as you know that you will be unable to borrow the pass so another library patron can make use of it. Our 16 museum passes are available for everyone’s enjoyment!
