Saturday Matinee: Norm of the North, rated PG.  Saturday, April 23 at 2pm.

This animated comedy is great for the whole family!  When a real estate development invades his Arctic home, Norm and his three lemming friends head to New York City, where Norm becomes the mascot of the corporation in an attempt to bring it down from the inside and protect his homeland.

Fairy and Gnome Houses: Monday, April 25 from 2pm to 4pm

We will build houses for our woodland friends!  Weather permitting we will make our creations outside on the front lawn of the Library.  Using all natural materials, we will create one-of-a-kind dwellings for these magical creatures.  Don’t worry, if the weather doesn’t cooperate, we will build an indoor version.  Bring your creativity and any natural materials you would like.

Dover Shockwave Robotics Team: Tuesday, April 26 at 10am
Join us on Tuesday, April 26 at 10am to learn about the Dover Shockwave Robotics Team!  Find out how the team was started, how the members became involved and meet their robot.

Star Wars Marathon: Wednesday, April 27 from 1 to 8:30

Don’t miss round 2 of our Stars Wars Marathon!  The Phantam Menace will be shown at 1pm, Attack of the Clones at 3:30, and Revenge of the Sith at 6pm.  Popcorn and refreshments will be served.

Mystic Drumz:  The Legend of Marshmallow Island: Thursday, April 28 at 2pm

This adventure in World Music blends multicultural music themes and interactive audience participation.  The show will feature incredible sound effects and unique instruments from around the globe, including the Nigerian Talking Drum, Brazilian Quica, Vibraslap, Flextone, Chinese Gongs and more. Bring the whole family to laugh and learn together as we track down “The Legend of Marshmallow Island”.

Book Buddies:  Friday, April 29 from 2pm to 4pm
Children’s Room
Join us in the Children’s Room for a fun-filled afternoon of reading and crafts.  Big kids (middle school and up) will be matched with a little kid for reading!  Sign-up in the Children’s Room, call 516-6052 or visit the Library’s web site at library.dover.nh.gov.

We have several high school and middle school students ready to do crafts and read to younger kids during our Book Buddy program. Travelogue presentation: Yellowstone & Big Sky Country, April 19, 7pm

    

On Tuesday, April 19 at 7pm, the Friends of the Library will present a slide show and talk by Rick Little, entitled “Adventure Trip to Yellowstone and Big Sky Country - The Magic of the West”.  Rick, a native of Marblehead, MA and graduate of the University of Maine, is a life-long fisherman and the proprietor of Shadcreek Flies in Hampstead, NH which teaches classes and sells hand-tied flies

     In this show, which explores one corner of the amazing western United States, the audience will travel along with Rick as he explores the beauty of the Bighorn River region in south-central Montana, the canyons of the Missouri in central Montana, and the magnificence of Yellowstone National Park and the Beartooth Highway. His presentation will highlight the beautiful rivers, mountains and canyons of this part of Montana and Wyoming. Come and see for yourself why it’s called “Big Sky Country”.

The Library will be closed Sunday, March 27th for Easter. While we are closed, you can still access eBooks, eMagazines, videos, and music without leaving home. 

Irish Balladeer Paul Carroll in concert, Tuesday, March 15 @ 7pm

     The Friends of the Dover Public Library are pleased to present Irish balladeer Paul Carroll in a musical performance on Tuesday evening, March 15 at 7pm in the Library Lecture Hall.

     Paul Carroll grew up in Dublin during the ballad boom of the sixties where the pubs were packed with folk singers and ballad groups.  It is there that he found a love for the music and songs that were to be part of his life. He credits his mother for giving him the gift of song.  She was a fine singer in her own right and he remembers fondly the “hooleys” in the house.

           Paul emigrated to Australia in the early 70’s but he never strayed very far from the music, singing in the folk clubs of Sydney, Perth and Melbourne. During his time in Melbourne he was a founding member of the Celtic band, Poteen, who were Australia’s premiere Celtic band, sharing the stage with icons like Eric Bogle, The Dubliners, The Furey’s and Boys of the Lough.

           Paul’s latest CD is “The Road You Take”. He has made his home in Derry, NH for nearly 25 years.  Join us at the library for this delightful performance, just before St. Patrick’s Day!

The Dover Public Library is proud to host an informal recital of flute music performed by Berwick artist, writer and musician Ross Bachelder, on Sunday, March 6 at 2:00 PM. Accompanying him at the recital will be well-known Greenland, NH pianist Cheryl Lynne Stromksi. Writer, artist, and musician Ross Bachelder, who lives in Berwick, has been performing as a musician and exhibiting his unorthodox and playful drawings, paintings, found object assemblages and photographs in galleries in Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts for many years.  For information about Ross Bachelder’s March 6 recital, you may call Dover Public Library at 603-516-6050 or write Ross Bachelder at artsmultiple@gmail.com.

Calling All Peeps to the Dover Public Library!

The Dover Public Library is looking for creative Dover residents, Dover students, or Dover Public Library cardholders to enter our eighth annual “Peeps Show” Contest this March.

Here’s how it works: Build a diorama using Peeps of any color or species in a standard size shoe box. The theme is anything literary; recreate a scene from your favorite book, play, or poem. The first 16 entries will receive a free plush Peep bunny or chick!

Children ages 2 – 6 are invited to enter the Kids Division, and ages 7 – 10 may enter in the Youth Division. Peeps, er, people 11- 16 may enter the Teen Division, while those 17 or older are invited to compete in the Adult Division.On the back of your shoe box, please include your name, address, phone number, and title of your “Peeps Show”.

All Peeps displays may be dropped off at the Dover Public Library beginning Monday, March 14 through Saturday, March 26. The Peeps will be displayed in the library for all to enjoy. The winner of each division will receive a $25 Target gift card, courtesy of the Friends of the Library. Prizes will be awarded on Monday afternoon, March 28. 

Peeps should be picked up by 5pm on Saturday, April 2. All Peeps not picked up by the deadline will be discarded or eaten!  For more information, call the Reference Desk at the Dover Public Library: 516-6082.

Free Event During School Vacation Week

Unfortunately, due to lack of interest we are cancelling the 6th & 7th Grade STEMbassador event during school vacation. However, we have increased the age range for the Design a Theme Park Ride event, and increased the number of kids we can accept. See below for a full description:

Design a Theme Park Ride is an activity for 4th & 7th graders:
Thursday, February 25 @ 1pm

In groups, students will design a theme park ride that will drop as fast as possible while keeping riders safely inside the ride using various materials provided. There will be other constraints to make the design activity challenging. With the help of UNH engineers, students will learn the various steps required for good engineering - ask, imagine, build, test, and improve. This activity will address mechanical engineering, designing, teamwork, and time management.

This event is limited to 25 students so sign-up is necessary. Sign-up  in-person, by phone (603-516-6050), or online.
