Good news to all aspiring writers out there--Dr. Seuss' first book, And To Think I Saw It On Mulberry Street, was rejected for publishing 27 times! A chance meeting with a friend, who had just become a publisher, and the rest is history. There was a great story about "How Dr. Suess Got His Start On Mulberry Street" on Morning Edition.

Remembering Bessie Parker

I found a lovely surprise on my desk this morning. Someone had donated this photo of a story time given by Bessie Parker, who worked at the Dover Public Library from 1900-1948. She is said to have worked here for 52 years so she may have started even earlier than 1900. I would love to hear from anyone who recognizes children in the photo, or even attended a story hour given by Bessie. Do you have a story time memory you would like to share?

Celebrate the 10th anniversary of “Dover Reads”! "Dover Reads", a citywide reading project sponsored by the Dover School District Community Involvement Committee, encourages everyone in Dover to read the same book to promote a sense of community and the joy of reading.

This year, we are very excited that the committee has chosen The Talisman of Elan and Antarctic Ice by Dover resident Jim Mastro.
All are welcome to join us for the annual "kick-off" celebration on Friday, January 20th in the Renaissance Room @ the Dover Middle School from 7:00-8:00 p.m. Come and meet Jim and hear his presentation on his life as a scientist exploring Antarctica, and his path to becoming an author.

What Lies Beneath

I just finished a fascinating, and short, history of what lies beneath the city of London, called London Under by Peter Ackroyd. I thought I had a pretty good idea of what lurked beneath London being a fan of English history, but I was surprised at how much more there is to the story. It is more than old Victorian brick lined sewers and forgotten tube lines. Hidden below the city lies Saxon coffins, mammoth bones, plague pits, sacred springs, relics, buried roads, and even a Roman galley.

In 1865 a gang of workmen, digging beneath the surface of Oxford Street, found a curious trap-door. They opened it and were astonished to find a flight of sixteen brick steps. They followed them and "entered a room of considerable size." The walls were built of red brick, with eight arches originally designed to let in the light. In the middle of the chamber was a pool or bath, about 6 feet in depth. It was half-full of water, and a spring could still be seen bubbling up. It was in all probability a Roman bapistery in which the water still flowed from a tributary of the Tyburn.

Perceval and the Holy Grail

On Tuesday evening January 17 at 7pm, the Friends of the Dover Public Library will present an interactive talk about the Holy Grail by writer and poet Diana Durham. Come hear and participate in one of the world’s most intriguing stories: the quest for the grail as Durham talks about its evolution through the centuries and why it is still relevant in our lives today. Willing audience members will have the chance to become Perceval, Arthur, Morgana, Merlin, the grieving maiden, and other fascinating characters as scenes are acted out from this new dramatic retelling.

In the story of Perceval, the young and impulsive knight travels through a wasteland kingdom of strange warriors and damsels. On his journey, he meets the great King Arthur and the wise wizard Merlin and enters mysterious Grail Castle. Befriended by the sorceress Morgana, he unravels the meaning of the Grail.

Diana Durham speaks and runs workshops about the Arthurian and Grail myths and their meaning, and has told the story of Perceval and the Grail to a wide range of audiences, young and old. She has been called “a fabulous storyteller”, “evocative” and “inspiring”. In addition to her non-fiction book “The Return of King Arthur”, Diana has published two poetry collections, “Sea of Glass” and “To the End of the Night”'. In London, Diana worked with the Angels of Fire performance group, appearing in The Voice Box at the Royal Festival Hall. In New Hampshire, she founded '3 Voices' three women writers, funded in part by the NH State Council on the Arts, who have performed state-wide. She is currently a Visiting Research Associate at the Women’s Studies Research Center at Brandeis University.

All lectures in the Friends of the Library’s Cultural Series are free and open to the public. Refreshments will follow the program. Please call the Library, 516-6050, for more information.

Afraid of Librarians?

This week’s Time Magazine (1/9/12) has an article entitled “Fearing Well” (p. 36) by Jeff Wise. He cautions us that there are plenty of things to fear, so choose carefully! Apparently, people routinely misjudge risks and fixate on perceived threats which are really not harmful, instead of the really scary stuff that we should be afraid of. In the 4-quadrant graphic illustrating the article, different things are placed on a matrix scale divided by dangerous/not dangerous and what we fear/don’t fear.
You really need to see the illustration, but the bottom left quadrant shows things which have both “not dangerous” and “not fearful” characteristics, and here, along with teddy bears and hugs, are listed Librarians! The description of us says, “In times of stress, we take comfort in trusted authorities.”
So I’m of mixed minds about this characterization. Yes, I’m happy to provide a less-stress, comfortable, fear-free environment in our library for our patrons (and I’ve heard a lot recently about people growing weary of being so tuned-in all the time to their e-devices so they’re seeking more solace, quiet, and contemplative spaces---not that you can find too much of it in our busy library, but anyway… ). Still, I hate to cater to that stereotypical image of the meek and mild librarian whose worst weapon is her “shush”. Not that I want to inspire fear, but neither do we want to be seen as Casper Milquetoasts!

I look forward to the best of 2011 book lists because, even though I might not agree with them all, it makes for interesting perusing--and I usually find a gem that I somehow missed during the year. NPR had a very interesting list called "The Teens are All Right: 2011's Top YA Novels". The library has 4 of the titles on the list (the 5th is on order) and they have all been very popular:

A Father's Wish for his Sons

A father came in last night looking for a poem. He said the poem was written by Rudyard Kipling and was about becoming a man. He said his father had always had a copy of the poem displayed in his house, and now he wanted a copy of the poem for his own sons. New Early Literacy Station!

Thanks to The Friends of the Dover Public Library, the Children's Room now has a new computer station for our young patrons. The Early Literacy Station is a self-contained educational computer for children ages 2-8. This easy to use system allows the child to select from a wide range of carefully chosen programs (represented by the cartoon-like icons) by clicking the child-sized mouse or by touching the screen.

As soon as the computer was set up in the Children's Room (we just had to plug it in!), three librarians were trying it out when a young patron asked, "Can I try that?". She quickly found her way to "Dora's World Adventure" and had no problem figuring things out. I have a feeling that our young patrons will be teaching us how to navigate the 50+ programs that cover 7 subject areas--Math, Science, Social Studies, Reading, Writing, Music & Art, and Reference!

Death Comes to Pemberley

I was thrilled to hear that P.D. James, at age 91, had come out with a new novel, and I was even more excited when I saw the title--"Death Comes to Pemberley". This novel is a mash-up of a couple of my favorite things, P.D. James and Jane Austen. It is the 200th anniversary of Austen's debut in print and so there have been a host of books written about her, about her characters, modernizations of her novels, etc. but The New York Times Book Review feels that P.D. James has done it with style. P. D. James..."is far too wise to overstep her authorial license. Her innovation has been to transplant the dramatis personae from Austen into her own suspenseful universe, preserving their likenesses and life force. James clearly understands that many readers feel as close an attachment to Austen’s characters as they do to their own relatives and friends. So she cannily begins by furnishing answers to the natural question: “Where are they now?” " The book begins 6 years into the marriage of Lizzy and Darcy and updates us on all of the relations involved. Of course, because it is P.D. James, there is a murder. I can't wait to sit by the fire with a cup of tea and catch up on everything happening at Pemberley.

Librarian wins Punctuation Contest!

I adore punctuation (and, as as my staff knows, correcting punctuation!). Thus, a Chicago librarian is my new hero! September 24 was National Punctuation Day (who knew?), and NPD organizers held a contest: write one three-sentence paragraph that included 13 separate punctuation marks: apostrophe, brackets, colon, comma, dash, ellipsis, exclamation point, hyphen, parentheses, period, question mark, quotation mark, and semicolon.

Ann Heinrichs, a part-time librarian at the Poetry Foundation, wrote this winner:

"Get that [*******] animal off my keyboard!" he roared---apparently abandoning his (short-lived) enthusiasm for her new kitten. Clearly, the honeymoon was over: first, the tantrum over hairs in the sink; next, the brouhaha about the napkin rings; and now, the paroxysm aimed at Tippy. Jenny's mind raced over her options: Should she leave him...or should she kill him?

Utterly clever...I just love this!

Memoirs of a Geisha (I mean Goldfish!)

I was thrilled to see that Memoirs of a Goldfish by Devin Scillian won the Ladybug Picture Book Award for 2011. Each year a list of 10 nominees is chosen by librarians, and preschoolers to third graders get to vote on their favorite. I usually read through the nominated books in order to help me pick books for the kids on my holiday list. I really enjoyed several on the list--such as Ugly Pie, Hibernation Station, and The Cow Loves Cookies--but Memoirs of a Goldfish was my favorite, as well as my 4 year old sons. The book is charming, funny, and has nice message to boot!

Horror Stories for Books

Thanks to the Swiss Army Librarian for finding this clever cartoon. It seemed particularly apt after watching the Library's copy of The Help.I missed all those marvelous character building details that had to be sacrificed to fit a 451 page book into a 2 hour movie. Don't get me wrong, great movie, just not as satisfying as the book.

Library Users Buy Books! There's Proof!

Publishers Weekly recently reported on a survey conducted by Library Journal which concludes that libraries are a powerful economic engine for the book business. Anecdotally, we've always believed this, and we've scoffed when publishers claimed that sales to libraries cut their profits because people would borrow books instead of buying them. Nonsense!
In fact, libraries BOOST book sales. Over 50% of library users report purchasing books by an author they were introduced to in the library! The survey confirmed that public libraries are an active partner with the publishing industry in building the book and e-book markets.
Plus, in addition to the billions of $$$ libraries spend buying books for their collections, these books in turn spur individual readers to buy more books. With the release of this survey, "publishers now have the first really broad, deep look at what library users do with books...and perhaps more importantly---what library users do with their wallets outside of libraries."
Library users are avid readers, listeners, and talkers, and the library is an important part of a rich ecosystem of cultural exchange that is seamlessly connected to the publishing marketplace.

Cowboys and Aliens

I just watched Cowboys and Aliens and loved it. Its perfect for the western fan who likes Science Fiction and the SF lover who likes westerns. Slimy green Aliens invade frontier era western U.S. seeking gold, and humans to experiment on. Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford are determined to head them off at the pass. The movie starts off with a bang with a funny shootout. Great fun entertainment, put your hold on it now!

Urban Farm

The Library has just subscribed to Urban Farm, a magazine for people living in the city or suburbs who are interested in raising their own food and living sustainably. Some of the topics Urban Farm has covered include goat and sheep care, keeping chickens, making your own bread, gardening in the shade, growing plants in a greenhouse, creating your own root cellar, growing herbs, making frozen jams, hydroponics, and raising bees. There is something to interest just about everyone. Make sure to take a look next time you are in the Library.

A Staff Pick

The Librarians have been passing the Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh around and we all loved it. I was drawn to it because of the aspect of magical realism. The main character, Victoria, has built a successful florist business because of her uncanny skill with the language of flowers. She can assemble a bouquet that reignites lost passion, or inspires happiness even in a moody teenage girl. Victoria becomes highly sought after by brides who want not only a beautiful bouquet, but one that has significance and will have an affect on the marriage. Victoria is not the dreamy romantic you would expect in someone well versed in the language of flowers. She is a scarred, scared product of the foster care system filled with hatred and mistrust. The first bouquet she gave after learning about the language of flowers was a thistle which signifies misanthropy. You will root (no pun intended) for Victoria to overcome her bitter past and accept the love that is offered to her.

Fascinating details about the language of flowers are sprinkled throughout the book. You may have to choose another favorite flower after learning peonies indicate anger and yellow roses mean infidelity. How about some tulips, a declaration of love?

Christmas with Mother Goose

For the 2nd year, the staff at the Dover Public Library decorated a tree for the Festival of Trees (held last Friday night). This year, our theme was "Christmas with Mother Goose" and we featured ornaments and streamers from dozens of classic nursery rhymes. Featured on long garlands were The Three Little Kittens (and their lost mittens), Hickory Dickory Dock (plus all the running mice), Humpty Dumpty (accompanied by all the king's horses and all the king's men), Jack and Jill (tumbling down the tree with pails), and Little Bo Peep (and of course her sheep). Our tree topper was a bedazzled Mother Goose exorting everyone to "Believe!" and watching over all her rhyming characters.

We were thrilled when this year's high bidder at the silent auction decided to donate the tree back to the Library where it could be viewed by everyone. What a thoughtful gesture! And we are very grateful to now have the Mother Goose Tree on display in the Children's Room for the holiday season. Come in and see how many nursery rhymes you can recognize and recite! Fascinating Read

As the 100th anniversary of the Titanic disaster approaches (April 14, 2012), expect to see many new books being released to commemorate this historic event. The innumerable stories written about the disaster, whether fact or fiction, have always been fascinating to adults and children alike.

I have just finished reading the latest addition to the Children's Room collection, Titanic Sinks! by Barry Denenberg and let me tell you I couldn't put it down. The book is filled with photographs, eyewitness accounts, actual newspaper articles from Modern Times: Your World Illustrated and more but what I found most fascinating was the journal kept by S. F. Vanni, the chief correspondent of the Modern Times, who was a passenger/reporter on the Titanic. Vanni's notes begin as the Titanic leaves port and continues until the ship is sinking (his last line was "It's t"). His waterlogged journal was salvaged and preserved. This is its first appearance and it is presented unedited.

As the book's dust jacket blurb states, "This is the ultimate ''you are there" experience---welcome aboard!"

My New Favorite Web Site

I recently discovered a web site that I am very excited about--the International Children's Digital Library. This site is FREE and includes 4,500 book in 54 languages. The web site is super easy to use and you can search for English language books within a specified age range. Just click on a book and start reading. You don't have to sign up for an account unless you want to keep a personalized bookshelf and set other personal preferences. It is so wonderful to be able to read stories from different countries since they would be near to impossible to find if you were looking for them, and they wouldn't be translated. This is truly a gem!

Putting It in Perspective

I read an interesting tidbit in this month's Food Network Magazine that may be of interest to those of you cringing at the thought of having to prepare huge holiday feasts. Food historian Kathleen Wall says the first Thanksgiving wasn't easy. "If you think your turkey dinner is a lot of work, try re-creating the first one: you'd have to feed 140 people over 3 days with no electricity." And your kitchen would be so dark and smokey that you would hardly be able to see the food.

The End of the World...Again.

So just when we think it is all over for the freaky little old preacher of doom in California, I mean, come on, he got the end date wrong twice this year; the Mayans step in. I am reading a book called Mayan December by Brenda Cooper. According to the Mayan calendar, the end of the world is December 21, 2012. Cooper's novel is an account of the odd events leading up to Dec 21 that happen to Archeoastronomer Dr.Alice Cameron and her 11 yr old daughter Nixie. Cameron is visiting the Yucatan Peninsula for a conference. While she is there, time seems to be overlapping. Her daughter Nixie appears to be a catalyst. Why is this happening? I don't know yet- I haven't finished the book. What I do know is that we've go another year to prepare and I hope that's it for doomsday predictions. These end of the world celebrations are hard on my liver.

If you are looking for a good listen, try The Bucolic Plague by Josh Kilmer-Purcell. This audiobook tells the amusing story of two guys from Manhattan that fall in love with a beautiful old mansion in upper New York State and try to create a Martha Stewart style working farm out of it. Brent actually worked for Martha Stewart and has accordingly high standards that often clash with the dirty reality of life on a farm. Josh is a former drag queen with a great sense of humor who really brings the story of the two men, their goats, a cow named cow, and their occasionally conflicting visions and dreams to life.

Hours: 15.5 hours per week : Monday 8:30-12; Tuesday through Friday 8:30-11:30
Wage: $9.94 per hour (City of Dover, DMEA Grade 7)
Starting date: November 28, 2011

Duties include:
1. Reshelving library materials in their proper places in adult and children's departments.
2. Logging on and off computers and performing duties related to closing the building.
3. Reading the shelves in order to keep them neat and orderly.
4. Assisting patrons in finding materials.
5. Retrieving books returned to the book drop.

Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old. Must be able to stand and walk for 3-4 hour shifts, and able to lift and carry loaded bookbags. Must be able to work independently, accurately, and efficiently.

Browser Battles

Long, long ago, when the Library first began offering free internet access, we used Mozilla as the internet browser. Most people were using Internet Explorer, it came already installed on PCs. We ended up switching over to Internet Explorer because people were used to it. I stubbornly resisted, sticking to Mozilla which eventually became Firefox. Google developed its own internet browser called Chrome and many people switched over to that. I came across this interesting article which stated that in October "Internet Explorer's share of global browser usage dropped below 50 percent for the first time in more than a decade". Most people I know are still using Internet Explorer. What browser do you use?

Downloading Audiobooks after Upgrading to IOS 5

Advice from the Tech Librarian at NHSL for those of you who have upgraded your Apple products to ios 5:

If you have upgraded to ios5 things work just a little differently now with the WMA audiobook to iPhone/iPod transfer.

Uninstall and reinstall the OverDrive Media Console software before beginning. You may also want to update iTunes.

Check out, download, and start the transfer from the OverDrive Media Console as usual. Make sure your iPhone/iPod is plugged into your computer, iTunes is running and your device is recognized by iTunes before starting the transfer with the OverDrive Media Console.

The transfer will place the WMA audiobook directly onto your iPhone/iPod and into its own playlist. You should see the author listed as the name of the new playlist.

The file is already marked as an audiobook and should resume playback and not be shuffled into your music.

Find the audiobook under your iPod's playlists, not in the music or audiobook folder.

That time of year...

It's that time of year again when some museums change their visiting hours to their "off season" schedule. Here in the Children's Room, we want you to be aware of the following changes when planning your visit and reserving the membership passes:

The New Hampshire Farm Museum closed for the season on October 16. However, the museum and country store will be open on Saturdays from 10 am to 4 pm through November 19.

From November through March, The Seacoast Science Center is open Saturday-Monday only from 10 am to 5 pm and "most days that school is out during the winter months". With the library's membership pass, patrons can visit any day of the week, year-round; just call ahead to let them know you are coming (they need to turn lights on!).

Strawbery Banke Museum ended their general museum hours on October 31. They will remain open for guided tours of four historic houses on Saturdays & Sundays, November 5-6, 12-13, 19-20, 26-27 and on Friday, November 25 from 10 am-2 pm.

From December 1-30, the museum will be open weekdays for guided tours of five decorated historic houses from 10 am to 2 pm. Tours begin on the hour with the last tour leaving at 2 pm.

Also, in December the museum's popular Candlelight Strolls will be held Saturday and Sunday, December 3-4, 10-11, & 17-18. Saturdays from 5:00pm-9:00pm & Sundays from 4:00pm-8:00pm you can stroll through life in a simpler time as the history of New England's holiday traditions, sounds, & smells unfold around you.

From December 31-April 30 the museum will be closed.

A Tale of Two Zombies

I am listening to a terrific zombie book right now called The Reapers Are Angels by Alden Bell. DPL has the book, I downloaded the audio from NH Downloadable books. It is an intense story of a young woman making her way across an America remade by a zombie plague. It's hard to get out of the car when Temple is trying to escape a clan of mutants or running from the vengeful brother of a man she killed. Gripping and occasionally gory. Another book just came in for me, Zone One by Colin Whitehead. Zone One is a much more literary examination of what happens to society when a plague decimates most of its members, and sad to say, it is just not as enthralling as Temple's story. It seems like zombies are the new vampires. Since it is almost Halloween I have to esquire, which creature do you prefer to read about; vampires, zombies, werewolves or ghosts?

Gigantic Book Sale This Year

We finally got all the books into position up on the third floor and there is not an inch of room to spare. The Friends of the Library Annual Book Sale starts this Friday at 9 for card holders and is open to the general public Saturday morning at 9. A Tale Told by Trees

I took my dogs for a walk yesterday by one of the schools in Lee which has a series of trails behind it. I noticed a tree had a piece of paper stapled to it so I went closer to see what it said. To my surprise, I found it was a page from Fairy Houses by Tracy Kane. I saw that trees all down the trail all had their own pages. As I walked along the path I was able to read the story. I envisioned children being led through the woods and being told the enchanting story of how fairy houses came to be. What a wonderful and creative idea. You don't need to find this magical forest path if you want to learn how to make your own fairy house, just check out our copy of the book.

C'est La Vie

While one of our lovely librarians vacations in Paris this week the rest of us are left here in the dreary fall weather to feel sorry for ourselves. And since I wasn’t quite envious enough I decided to read Lunch in Paris: A Love Story with Recipes by Elizabeth Bard. Now the Paris travel memoir/love story/ recipe book has been done to death, I know, and in some ways this book is not all that different but in other ways it is a breath of fresh air. Bard does fall for a Frenchman but she doesn’t necessarily fall for France or Paris for that matter. As a writer, art historian, and foodie she loves the idea of Paris but as a true blue New Yorker the slow walk through life that the French thrive on almost drives her nuts. When her father-in-law is diagnosed with stage IV cancer the cultural differences between her and her husband and his family are heartbreaking. As you watch her take back seat, after all this is not her father, and let them do things their way you feel her frustration and realize how different we face life’s challenges in our American culture. In the end this is a happy story about love, family, acceptance, and food (but of course) and an excellent departure from the “life is perfect over there” tradition.

Ballet @ your Library!

Ballet fun for your entire family will be held in the Lecture Hall of the Dover Public Library on Wednesday, October 19th at 4 PM when Edra Toth, founder and Director of Edra Toth's Academy of Dance & Music, brings her dancers to join the author, David Rottenberg, in a special reading & ballet performance of Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig.

Born in Budapest, Hungary, Edra Toth immigrated to Boston, MA when she was a small child, during the Hungarian uprising in 1956. E. Virginia Williams, the founder of the Boston Ballet, offered Toth a scholarship to attend her school of dance. Toth became Williams’s protégé and made her dance debut at the age of 13. She became prima ballerina at age 15 and danced with Rudolph Nureyev when she was 18. Toth performed at the White House at the invitation of the Johnson administration, and since her retirement as a dancer, has dedicated herself to dance education through her dance academies and the ballet company, NorthEastern Ballet Theatre, of which she is the artistic director.

David Ira Rottenberg, who lives in Natick, MA, has published three business books with business professor, Jeffrey Shuman, and a poetry book, Soldiers of Beauty. Gwendolyn, the Graceful Pig is his first children's book.

Following the performance, Ms. Toth will teach the children in the audience some dance steps in a mini-ballet class, and Mr. Rottenberg will be available to answer questions and sign copies of his book. Wear your tutus & dancing shoes (optional) & bring your camers! All are welcome!

Do You Collect Things?

Want a comprehensive look at the fun, weird and wonderful history of the history of museums, collectors and collecting habits? This talk also invites you to think about your own collecting interests. Why do you collect certain things and not others? Is there a theme? If possible, bring a sample of your collection with you to this program.

Hetty Startup is an adjunct professor of art history and architectural history at the University of New Hampshire Manchester. Professor Startup’s research has focused on late 19th and early 20th century British and American women’s leadership in cultural organizations, with specific emphasis on the arts and crafts and settlement house movements. She has also written and lectured on modern architectural and design history with a special emphasis on Frank Lloyd Wright and his American and European contemporaries. Educated in the UK, Hetty has worked in museums and non-profit settings as well as teaching for over twenty years at the college level. She serves on two non-profit boards in NH, works with the NH Humanities Council in their Connections program. She likes to garden and make watercolor and felted paintings.

Free Movies On Saturdays at 2

Except that it turns out Rocky is going to circus camp to learn to tame lions, Amy is headed off to Borneo with her mom to save a lost tribe and Judy is stuck home with her pesky little brother Stink and second-best friend Frank Pearl. Just when she thinks things are as rotten as they can be, her parents announce that they will be going to California and Judy will have to stay behind with her Aunt Opal, who she's never even met! It looks like Judy's best summer ever has just become her way worst summer ever. But feisty, fearless Judy Moody never gives up. With help from some unexpected sources, she's headed for a summer full of surprises.

Hidden Treasures

I was shelving books in the Historical Room when I noticed a pile of papers hidden away in the dark recesses behind the histories of Maine. I pulled the row of books forward so I could reach the papers. It was a stack of banquet advertisements and receipts from the Strafford County Republican Club circa 1880s. I love this advertisement for dinner and "jollification". Dinner includes such treats as cold ox tongue and escaloped oysters. I hoped I had discovered a lost copy of the U.S. Constitution, or an unpublished Edgar Allan Poe manuscript. Turned out to be nothing so valuable, but it was interesting.

Teen Loft

This collection, which includes teen fiction, nonfiction, poetry, short stories, graphic novels, and comic books, has been growing more popular each year, and so it needed a bit more space. Come check out our Halloween display which has a number of books devoted to the art of pumpkin carving. You don't need to be an expert with a knife to carve most of these pumpkins. There are funny pumpkins as well as scary pumpkins. When I used these books last year the neighbors voted the puking pumpkin their favorite.

Unburied Treasure

Thanks to Dr. Charles D. Cohen, author of The Seuss, the Whole Seuss, and Nothing but the Seuss and collector of all things related to Dr. Seuss, a "buried treasure" has been unearthed for all to enjoy.

From 1948-1959, Ted Geisel (Dr. Seuss) published a series of short stories that appeared in magazines and mostly forgotten when the magazines were tossed. Charles found references to these stories and began a mission to find them. After traveling to libraries to research old magazine collections (yay for libraries), he found them and was able to track down and purchase the original magazines through the Internet (yay for the Internet).

The result of his efforts is the new book, The Bippolo Seed and Other Lost Stories by Dr. Seuss---a collection of seven rarely seen stories written and illustrated by Dr. Seuss.

My favorite story in the book is "Tadd and Todd", a story about identical twins and the need for an individual as well as a shared identity. I will be sharing this with my identical twin grandsons!

Fanatic Readers

There was a great article yesterday on the CNN web site titled "How to Get Your Kid to be a Fanatic Reader". The article was written by James Patterson and it stressed how important it is for parents to be involved in their kids reading by both helping them to find books they will love and by being reading role models. Mr. Patterson goes on to describe how he and his wife helped their son find books that he gobbled up and his reading skills improved dramatically. "Here's a simple but powerful truth that many parents and schools don't act on: The more kids read, the better readers they become." Of course, if your father is James Patterson he probably knows a lot about books and authors and can easily find titles that will interest you. However, most parents probably aren't as aware of current trends in fiction for kids. As luck would have it I happen to know a few people who are up on it--yes I am talking about the librarians at your local library. Please give us an excuse to talk about good books and reading!

Downton Abbey

If you fell in love with the fabulous Masterpiece Theater series, Downton Abbey, like I did, you will be delighted to know that the Library has purchased the DVDs of the historical drama. The series takes place before World War I in England. Downton Abbey is the splendid country estate of the Crawley family. The stories revolve around their lives as well as the turbulent lives of the servants below stairs. The indomitable Maggie Smith enlivens the cast with withering zingers and crisp comments. After being startled by a swivel chair she makes a comment about new-fangled gadgets. The lawyer she is visiting explains that actually Thomas Jefferson invented the swivel chair quite awhile ago. Not one to be rebuked Dame Smith responds, "Can't one day go by without a fight with an American?"

The cast is stellar, the clothes magnificent, the story-line is involving, and the dialogue is lovely. Don't miss Downton Abbey.

Bumble-ardy

Want to feel like a kid again? Take a look at Maurice Sendak's latest picture book Bumble-ardy. This book evolved from a segment that aired on Sesame Street in the early 1970s. The story is about "a mischievous pig who has reached the age of nine without ever having had a birthday party. But all that changes when Bumble throws a party for himself and invites all his friends, leading to a wild masquerade that quickly gets out of hand." We just have to see if the "wild masquerade" can compete with the "wild rumpus"!

Every Thing On It

Do you have fond memories of reading Shel Silverstein books such as Where the Sidewalk Ends and A Light in the Attic? Today a new title is being released, Every Thing On It, which has 130 previously unpublished poems. This is the second book to be published since Mr. Silverstein's death in 1999. Did you know that Mr. Silverstein was also a songwriter and wrote the song A Boy Named Sue which was performed by Johnny Cash? This song is quite different from his children's poetry. :)

Autumn Just Around the Corner

I noticed a few leaves starting to change this weekend. It reminded me of one of my favorite Alfred Hitchcock films, The Trouble With Harry. This charming movie features a very young Shirley MacLaine, John Forsyth, and a great deal of stunning New England fall foliage. The black comedy revolves around the trouble with Harry, which is that he is dead. Half the town seems to think they are responsible for his death; they take turns burying, digging up, and moving poor Harry. There is much rapid-fire, funny dialog, especially between MacLaine and Jerry Mathers, who you may remember as The Beaver. This film is sure to put you in the mood to enjoy the snap in the air and blazing colors of Fall. Check it out!

Finding Something Good to Read is Easier than Ever

2011-2012 Cultural Series

Next Tues., Sept. 20 the Friends of the Library 2011-2012 Cultural Series begins. First up is The Negro Baseball League with Joseph Caliro which is both an exhibit and a lecture.The exhibit contains over 300 pieces of memorabilia including 49 autographed baseballs from the 20s, 30s, and 40s. Among the signed baseballs are 9 Hall of Fame inductees, and the only 3 women to ever play professional baseball. Baseball cards displayed will include the Ted Williams salute the negro league and cards from paintings by Marc Charello, illustrator for DC Comics. The exhibit will open at 6 pm and will be followed at 7pm by a presentation on the History of the Negro League. Visit our website to see a full line up of the Cultural Series events.

A few months back I read an article about fans of the movie Avatar forming support groups to help them deal with the fact that Pandora was not a real place and that they could not go there and live among the Na‘vi. I was tempted to make fun of this (I hated that movie) until I had a conversation with another librarian about our beloved Three Pines, the tiny (and fictional) French Canadian hamlet in the Louise Penny mystery series. Penny’s latest novel, A Trick of the Light, came out August 30^th and two days later Anne and I had already read it and were in a post Three Pines funk. We longed for Three Pines. We talked everyday about how we would spend the morning in Clara’s garden followed by a five course lunch at Olivier’s Bistro with dessert and coffee in front of the fire. Then we would wander across the bridge over the Bella Bella River and sit on the common with Ruth, the local poet/curmudgeon, and let her hurl insults at us. We would end our day by sinking into the fluffy white down comforters at Gabri’s B&B and dream of murder and mayhem and charming Inspector Gamache. With the exception of the ridiculously high homicide rate Three Pines seems like the most idyllic place to live, great food, quirky smart companions, charming vistas in every direction, and most importantly a bit of trouble to keep it all interesting. Even though we don’t have a proper support group for Louise Penny groupies we can offer up the follow suggestion to hold you over until your next trip to Three Pines; try the three Inspector Bruno mysteries by Martin Walker. They are set in the Perigord region of Southern France and even though it is not exactly the same it is equally charming, with much talk of food, a cast whimsical locals, and of course a grisly murder or two.

Fall Story Time Registration

Registration for our 6 pre-school story times begins on Monday, September 12. Story Times begin the week of September 19 and continue for 5 weeks.

Sign-up begins at 9:00a.m. (in person) for all groups--
Monday l:30p.m., Monday Bedtime (7:00p.m.) and Tuesday 9:30a.m. groups for 3-6 year-olds and Thursday and Friday (9:30 a.m.) toddler groups for children ages 21-36 months.
Phone call registration begins at 9:15a.m.

In addition to our "registered groups", we will be offering a "drop-in" story time (for all ages). This story time is open to all (visitors and non-resident card holders included)! Children and their caregivers are welcome to drop-in for any or all of these story times on Wednesdays @ 9:30 a.m.

Servapalooza

Things are a bit chaotic at the library today--there are dozens of Timberland volunteers painting and landscaping the library and the McConnell Center. If you come in today please use the front door, unless you need the elevator. We apologize for the inconveniences, but it will be worth it when we have nice fresh paint and beautifully landscaped lawns. A big thank you to all the volunteers!

Fall Hours

Does Your Book Need a Soundtrack?

The New York Times reports that a company called Booktrack is planning on releasing eBooks with soundtracks that play throughout the book. "Much of the music — about nine hours’ worth for the typical novel — is instrumental or ambient noise. But during livelier passages, a reader may hear the patter of footsteps, a booming gong, a crackling fire or the tick of a grandfather clock."

I think I would be terribly distracted by all the noise while I am trying to read. Soundtracks do really effect the atmosphere of a scene in a movie but if not done properly it becomes jarring. Adding sound effects would definitely distract me. What do you think, would you like a sound track with your book?

Where did everyone go?

It is evident today is the first day Dover schools are in session. It has been eerily quite in the Children's Room this morning. When you are used to hundreds of children on any given day during the summer, with their boisterous enthusiasm filling the room...the calm peacefulness reminded me that Autumn is upon us. An older patron stuck her head in this morning and stated, "It's too quite! I'm used to going by and hearing all of the joyous sounds." I agree. Looking forward to the renewed bustle after three o' clock!

Maine

Last week I was on vacation in Maine, and so I decided I just had to read Maine: A Novel by J. Courtney Sullivan. I loved it! The book is about three generations of the Kelleher family and their ties to the family summer house in Cape Neddick, Maine. The is book is filled with intriguing characters from Alice the ornery matriarch, to Kathleen the eldest daughter who has found happiness with a hippy worm farmer in California, and Ann Marie the oh-so-perfect yuppie daughter in law whose hobby is decorating doll houses. You will in turn love and hate these characters. It is also fun to read about familiar locations and events--watching the fire works in Portsmouth or eating dockside in Kittery. There is still enough summer left for you to fit this book in.

eReaders for Junior

We wrote a shocked post back in March about publishers marketing to children who use iPhones and iPads. Let a small child play with an iPad? Now there is no need to worry about getting baby food smeared across the screen or having your expensive piece of technology being dropped by tiny hands. There are now several eReaders available for the toddler set to age ten. eBookAnoid has a review of several of them.The reviewer states that he is sure you will see a jump in your child's reading if you buy one. What do you think?

Gotta Go! Gotta Go!

September is fast approaching and that means the kids are headed back to school. Another journey back is occurring in nature: the amazing migration of the monarch butterfly. After hatching from a tiny egg, the monarch caterpillar eats the leaves of the milkweed plant and begins its miraculous transformation inside its chrysalis. Once metamorphosis is complete, the butterfly makes its way to a particular spot in Mexico and returns north in the spring.
The children's book Gotta Go! Gotta Go! by Sam Swope is one of my favorites to share at this time of year. Come check out the books about monarchs on our "mini" display here in the children's room. Better yet, head outside and look for a field of milkweed plants!
